Don’t Put Off Getting Your Car Ready For Winter

We know, it is still August. The kids just went back to school. We’ve probably got at least two months before the first snow hits the Front Range. So, why are we talking about getting your car ready for winter now? Because, now is the right time to do it. Do you really want to be headed out to work in the morning on the day of the first snowfall, only to find that the defroster or heater you haven’t used all summer doesn’t work? We didn’t think so. You can take care of a few things yourself, but to make sure your car is 100 percent ready for the cold weather, come in to see us.

Inspect Your Tires

Tires that are on their last legs aren’t going to make it through winter. More importantly, they aren’t safe. Come in and see us for new, safe tires.

Replace All Fluids

Coolant is critical for the winter months. But it is also a really good idea to get an oil change before winter hits. And, depending on the depth of cold you are going to subject your car to, you might want to switch to a different type of oil. Give us a call; we can help you make that decision. And, please don’t forget the freeze-resistant wiper fluid. If you forget and the fluid freezes on your windshield while you are on the road, you’ve just created a very dangerous situation for you and everyone you’re on the road with.

Check Your Electrical System

It is easy to forget this step. But your hazard lights, headlights, and brake lights are more important in low-visibility winter conditions. This is a straightforward safety issue. Don’t skip it. If you don’t know what to look for, come by and let us do a thorough inspection for you.

How Cold Will You Go?

If you’re planning trips to high altitudes or places where temperatures stay below freezing for an extended period of time, you’ll want to keep some glycerine handy for de-icing. Don’t keep it in your glovebox! If your lock is frozen, you won’t be able to get your key in it to unlock it and get to the glycerine. Your local hardware store should have the de-icing supplies you need.

Pack an Emergency Kit

Emergency preparedness is important all year long. But, it is especially important in the winter, when lack of preparation can easily spell disaster. Here are a few things to consider for your emergency kit.

  • Spare, fully-charged cell phone battery
  • First aid kit
  • Granola bars and bottled water
  • Heavy blankets or sleeping bags
  • Flares and reflectors
  • Extra snow and ice scraper
  • Flashlights with extra batteries
  • Jumper cables
  • Non clumping cat litter or sand
  • Chains
  • Leather work gloves
  • Wool hat

Don’t delay. Make an appointment to see us for pre-winter inspections, car repairs, and tires. You’ll be glad you didn’t wait until the last minute. We are conveniently located on South Lincoln in Loveland. See you soon!
